De floating market, de barkjes, zijn terug

Op 8 mei 2023 werden met groot onthaal twee barkjes ontvangen. Ze waren sinds februari 2019 vertrokken omdat Venezuela de grens op slot deed, omdat president Maduro aanwijzingen had dat Venezolaans goud via het eiland werd gesmokkeld. In januari 2018 was de grens al 72 uur gesloten. Velen willen en niet geloven, laat staan weten. Daarna wilde Maduro de grens weer open maar gingen wij moeilijk doen vanwege corona en vluchtelingen.

De drijvende markt is naar mijn mening en die van anderen een werelderfgoed dat meer dan honderd jaar oud is. Het is weer typisch van ons dat wij de waarde er niet van inzien, zo is het een belangrijke toeristische atractie. Toen de barkjes weg bleven was er bij velen een jubelstemming dat die vuilmakers eindelijk weg waren. Er verschenen schetsjes van hoe wij daar restaurants en dergelijke zouden bouwen op die plek war zij stonden. Daarna plannen hoe onze eigen mensen daar groente en fruit zouden verkopen. Daarna werd het de standplaats voor souvenirverkopers uit Haïti en wat lokalen die―vaak geïmporteerde―groenten en fruit verkopen.

Met de inflatie die insloeg tijdens en na de pandemie (de oorlog) begon men steeds meer te verlangen naar de barkjes. Of de terugkomst inderdaad de prijzen zal verlagen valt te bezien. Voorlopig zijn het er maar twee barkjes.

Dan hoor ik dat men stelt dat de barkjes de net opkomende lokale landbouw zal beconcurreren. (Tijdens de lockdown werd de landbouw extra gestimuleerd.) Ik denk dat dat niet zo is omdat er voldoende mensen principieel de lokale boer willen ondersteunen. Het de ene sluit de ander niet uit.

Maar over het belangrijkste hebben wij het niet. Wij staan weer open naar onze buur. Een zeer groot land waar wij historisch, economisch, sociaal, cultureel en door familie mee verbonden zijn. En natuurlijk de olie. Onze wereld is weer groter. Onze mogelijkheden zijn weer ongelooflijk groter. Wij zien het niet omdat wij erg eurocentrisch zijn en daarmee vele en grote kansen laten liggen.
